Despite the cold weather drawing in, our skin still often carries the remnants of summer. Freckles and blemishes from our time in the sun can linger long after the leaves have fallen. Here are 5 ways to camouflage marks and imperfections with makeup that stays flawless.
Step 1: make sure your skin is well prepped
Exfoliating, cleansing and moisturising your skin gives it a fresh canvas to ensure makeup is applied evenly and your base is fresh and bright. Exfoliating helps to gently remove dry-looking patches that can quickly become visible beneath makeup. Cleansing makes sure any impurities are entirely removed and moisturising helps to hydrate and brighten.
Step 2: use an illuminating primer
Primer is great for keeping your makeup fixed all day. Not only does it mean a smoother application, it also stops your skin from sucking the moisture out of your makeup, which can make it look flakey. Using an illuminating primer adds an extra touch of brightness to your skin, which is ideal when the weather’s dark and gloomy.
Step 3: mix it up to find your perfect blend
Different colours and consistencies work better on different parts of the face, as well as covering up different kinds of imperfections. A camouflage concealer is ideal for covering blemishes and freckles. But different shades will work better on different problem areas. As a rule of thumb it’s best to use a shade one lighter than your foundation for underneath your eyes to reflect light and help them look brighter.
Step 4: start to layer gradually
Camouflage makeup is powerful stuff. It can hide a multitude of flaws, but that also means it’s easy to overdo it. Less is more, so start off gently dabbing and blending, to build up coverage steadily. This will give you a more natural look, which can also last longer.
Step 5: consider your environment
Winter weather often means going from harsh, windy and wet to hot and stuffy trains and offices. These extremes can quickly turn your flawless finish into a blotchy, streaky mess. Avoid this by choosing a water resistant foundation and concealer and then setting your look with your secret weapon: face powder. These powders are designed to hold make-up in place – even in extreme conditions – making it water, sweat and smudge resistant.
